What we are trying to achieve

Hi, and welcome to the old growth forest action page. We want to make the public aware of the catastrophic rates at which old growth forests are being destroyed around the world and particularly in the Styx Valley in Tasmania.

Like many people around the world who are concerned about preserving our environment, we believe that governments should be looking after our precious old growth forests rather than allowing them to be turned into piles of woodchip. Currently, woodchip from Australia is shipped to Asian countries where it is used to make cardboard boxes and paper. We believe that this is an appalling outcome for trees which have taken centuries to grow, and that there is much greater value in their preservation.

We wish to enable future generations to enjoy and respect the beauty of these old growth forests. If you feel this way, we are asking you to assist us by helping us to inform our politicians and tourism bodies.

Take the Pledge to save Tasmania's old growth forests

The concept of the pledge is to make the government and Tourism Tasmanian aware of the number of people who would visit Tasmania if the destruction of The Styx Valley ceased. We hope that this will encourage the Tasmanian government to see the economic value of saving these forests and to invest money into developing tourism, rather than allowing their unique natural resources to be destroyed.

Send a letter to the politicians

As we know, politicians are the ones who make many of the decisions in this country. They believe they know what is best for Australia, its environment and its people. However, we need to keep them informed of our views and interests so that they can make better decisions in the future. A prewritten letter has been created so that you can send it to the politicians listed. You may modify the letter and add your own comments or simply fill in your name, country and email address and hit the submit button.

How you can help our old growth forests at home and in the work place

There are always ways to help prevent the demand of paper and cardboard and in turn help prevent old growth forests around the world from being destroyed. These are just a few of the things you can do in your work place or at home to help.
  • Buy recycled toilet paper
  • Buy recycled paper bags
  • Buy recycled cardboard
  • Buy recycled paper and note books
  • When printing a draft use both sides of the paper
  • Recycle your paper and cardboard
  • Place a no junk mail sticker on your letter box
  • Use newspaper, recycled wrapping paper, a recycled gift box or bag for wrapping gifts
  • Check the news online rather than buying a newspaper
  • Try to avoid products with excessive packaging
